Andrew Gallivan has been a designer since he could wield a colored pencil. The Nashville native’s love of design led him to pursue sewing lessons in middle school and by the time he graduated highschool, he had created his first full collection, sewing each piece by hand, as he still does today.

Andrew began his formal training at the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. During school, he studied under designers from the city, Paris, and, of course, his hometown. After nearly a decade of residence in Bushwick, his designs have a decided edge, but with the wearability one would expect from someone with roots in the South. Since graduation, he has been increasingly inspired by the culture of LA and the nostalgia of the 90s and 2000s, both of which are reflected in his recent collections, which tend towards youthful confidence.

Andrew prides himself on how his garments make the wearer feel. Part of this is being mindful of the consumption and waste inherent in the modern-day fashion industry. His business model of made-to-order and custom designs helps reduce his carbon footprint. He also prioritizes recycled and vintage fabrics, dead-stock fabrics, and all-natural, higher quality materials. There is no better example of this than Andrew’s use of denim. He inherited all of his grandfather’s vintage jeans, worn in perfectly through years of farm work. His emphasis on quality, coupled with his expert pocket placements, results in jeans that you’ll want to wear for decades.

Andrew’s designs have been featured in The New York Times and Vogue.com. His garments are all heart and hand-made, with the same craftsmanship he has employed since his first collection over a decade ago, including designs like his ground-breaking chain dress that have taken years to develop. His one-of-a-kind commissioned designs for events, performances, and weddings further exhibit his creative possibility and technical capacity.
